Neil Patterson

I have been working with digital media; iPads and graphics tablets and iMacs, for the last 7 years. In the last 4 years I have been working almost exclusively with electronic media. I have invested in the hardware to create the images and I have invested in the printers which enable me to produce the majority of my own prints, although I do out-source the printing of larger images.

The drawing process is carried out working from the sketches and the many photographs that I take of my chosen subject matter. I never work from other photographer’s images. This is my work and every element of it, must be from my observations.

What I love about working with digital media is the freedom it gives to constantly adjust and alter my imagery; be it adjusting colour or making compositional changes. I find this liberating, as the fear of making mistakes is banished!

I decided a few years ago that I was going to sell my own work rather than sell my work through the Gallery system. In part, this was a belief that after a career in teaching and therefore being an artist of limited reputation, my best bet was to promote and sell my work independently.

Also, the nature of digital artwork is that the ‘Original’ piece of artwork does not actually exist other than as a series of electronic bites! So, Limited and Open-edition printing was always going to be the only way of selling my work. Selling my work through the gallery system would necessarily add another 40% to the price of any image. This makes my work less affordable and therefore less accessible. I currently sell my work predominantly through the Quayside Market in Newcastle (Neil Patterson – iPad Art, just in front of the Law Courts). This gives me the opportunity to be in complete control over the entire process from the creation of the work through to the pricing and selling of my work. It also gives me the opportunity to talk to people about my work. We talk about ideas, we talk about the technology, and we talk about the city and the landscape that surrounds us, in this beautiful corner of the World!
